A photonic which-path entangler based on longitudinal cavity-qubit coupling
A modulated longitudinal cavity-qubit coupling can be used to control the
path taken by a multiphoton wavepacket, resulting in a qubit--which-path (QWP)
entangled state. For QWP states, the fundamental limit to precision in
interferometry (the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound) is better than for either NOON
states or entangled coherent states having the same average photon number. QWP
states can also be used to generate long-range multipartite entanglement using
strategies for interfacing discrete- and continuous-variable
degrees-of-freedom
The effect of a 24-hour photoperiod on the survival, growth and swim bladder inflation of pre-flexion yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) larvae
The effects of two different continuous photoperiod regimes on survival, growth and swim bladder inflation of pre-flexion yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) larvae were investigated. Each photoperiod regime was tested twice with a different larval cohort to confirm the observed results. Trials 1 and 2 tested the effect of a reduced night-time light intensity (10-molesm-2s-1=30% of the daytime intensity) and found that those larvae reared for 8days under the 24h lighting (24-L) photoperiod exhibited a slight improvement in survival compared to those reared under the control photoperiod of 12h light (12-L), however these improvements were not significant. In addition, those larvae reared under this photoperiod regime were equal in length to those in the control. Trials 3 and 4 compared the same variables in larvae reared under a continuous photoperiod (24-L) with a constant light intensity of 30-molesm-2s-1, against those reared under the aforementioned 12-L photoperiod. Survival of larvae under the continuous photoperiods were 9±1% (n=2) and 10±2% (n=3) for Trials 3 and 4, respectively, compared to less than 1% in both control treatments; differences that in both cases were highly significant. In addition, in both trials larvae cultured under the 24-L photoperiod were significantly larger and exhibited more advanced development than those reared under the 12-L photoperiod, however swim bladder inflation was significantly lower. We suggest that the improved survival and growth achieved under a continuous photoperiod is due to the extended foraging time combined with the prevention of mortality caused by night-time sinking
The Interaction between the ISM and Star Formation in the Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC 4214
We present the first interferometric study of the molecular gas in the
metal-poor dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214. Our map of the 12CO(1-0) emission,
obtained at the OVRO millimeter array, reveals an unexpected structural wealth.
We detected three regions of molecular emission in the north-west (NW),
south-east (SE) and centre of NGC 4214 which are in very different and distinct
evolutionary stages (total molecular mass: 5.1 x 10^6 M_sun). These differences
are apparent most dramatically when the CO morphologies are compared to optical
ground based and HST imaging: massive star formation has not started yet in the
NW region; the well-known starburst in the centre is the most evolved and star
formation in the SE complex started more recently. We derive a star formation
efficiency of 8% for the SE complex. Using high--resolution VLA observations of
neutral hydrogen HI and our CO data we generated a total gas column density map
for NGC 4214 (HI + H_2). No clear correlation is seen between the peaks of HI,
CO and the sites of ongoing star formation. This emphasizes the irregular
nature of dwarf galaxies. The HI and CO velocities agree well, so do the
H-alpha velocities. In total, we cataloged 14 molecular clumps in NGC 4214. Our
results from a virial mass analysis are compatible with a Galactic CO-to-H_2
conversion factor for NGC 4214 (lower than what is usually found in metal-poor

Dietary Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Deprivation Does Not Alter Seizure Thresholds but May Prevent the Anti-seizure Effects of Injected Docosahexaenoic Acid in Rats.
Background: Brain concentrations of omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) have been reported to positively correlate with seizure thresholds in rodent seizure models. It is not known whether brain DHA depletion, achieved by chronic dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) deficiency, lowers seizure thresholds in rats. Objective: The present study tested the hypothesis that lowering brain DHA concentration with chronic dietary n-3 PUFA deprivation in rats will reduce seizure thresholds, and that compared to injected oleic acid (OA), injected DHA will raise seizure thresholds in rats maintained on n-3 PUFA adequate and deficient diets. Methods: Rats (60 days old) were surgically implanted with electrodes in the amygdala, and subsequently randomized to the AIN-93G diet containing adequate levels of n-3 PUFA derived from soybean oil or an n-3 PUFA-deficient diet derived from coconut and safflower oil. The rats were maintained on the diets for 37 weeks. Afterdischarge seizure thresholds (ADTs) were measured every 4-6 weeks by electrically stimulating the amygdala. Between weeks 35 and 37, ADTs were assessed within 1 h of subcutaneous OA or DHA injection (600 mg/kg). Seizure thresholds were also measured in a parallel group of non-implanted rats subjected to the maximal pentylenetetrazol (PTZ, 110 mg/kg) seizure test. PUFA composition was measured in the pyriform-amygdala complex of another group of non-implanted rats sacrificed at 16 and 32 weeks. Results: Dietary n-3 PUFA deprivation did not significantly alter amygdaloid seizure thresholds or latency to PTZ-induced seizures. Acute injection of OA did not alter amygdaloid ADTs of rats on the n-3 PUFA adequate or deficient diets, whereas acute injection of DHA significantly increased amygdaloid ADTs in rats on the n-3 PUFA adequate control diet as compared to rats on the n-3 PUFA deficient diet (P < 0.05). Pyriform-amygdala DHA percent composition did not significantly differ between the groups, while n-6 docosapentaenoic acid, a marker of n-3 PUFA deficiency, was significantly increased by 2.9-fold at 32 weeks. Conclusion: Chronic dietary n-3 PUFA deficiency does not alter seizure thresholds in rats, but may prevent the anti-seizure effects of DHA
